Want to go to Russia?

If you want to go and see something else, I can recommend a trip to the "New Russia". Go out from Moscow, to the republics, and have a great time!

Hello, Just out of curiosity, did u also go on the transibirian railway? If you did, how was that and where did u stop?
One of my latest ideas is to go all the way to beijing by train from Moscow.

I did go on the TransSiberian Railway but only a part of the way, from Irkutsk to Chabarovsk, but this was in 1979, and we made no stop-overs.

Larissa, do u mean because of the risk of getting robbed etc? Or dangerous in what way?

There are of course risks in everything one does, and the criminals in Russia shouldn´t be underestimated. There are really dangerous people everywhere, like for example in the USA . Common sense, a good planning, no dark alleys in late evenings, and stay sober in an unknown company - some good advice. I have never been in trouble, but I do follow these simple rules.

I've heard that it can be a problem to get a visa for trips to Russia. What is your experience regarding this? I would love to go to St.Petersburg, anyone who has been here?

I find Maria's question interesting, since St:Petersburg has been on my mind for a weekend-getaway.
Is it still not possible to attain the visa and 'invitation' at the border/airport?
2008-02-10 09:36
No.It´s not possible to get a visa at the airport. If you are a part of a tour-organiser trip they will get your visa for you. Otherwise you will have to apply for the visa by filling in the appropriate forms. You can download them from The Russian Embassys website. If you have friends in Russia inviting you, they will get a permit from the ministry of internal affairs and send it to you. Then you enclose this to the application when you apply. Mind that this takes some time! You should at least be prepared to start procedures one month ahead of your trip. If you dont work through a travel agency (such as Rysslandsresor.se - which I by the way can recommend) you can bring your filled-in forms directly to the Embassy in Stockholm . Don´t forget the passport. If you don´t happen to live in Stockholm you must leave a pre-paid envelope with your address together with your application, so the embassy can send the passport back to you. The visa procedure takes about one week, and the cost was 360 SEK last time I applied. This should be compared to the 1200 sek you will have to pay for an agency to do the work for you.

Maria and Sanook. I do recommend you to go to St. Ptersburg. The Erimitage - The Winter Palace - alone is worth the trip. I have been there a couple of times but not lately. Use the services of Rysslandsresor.se . They are good, friendly and professional.
